BORDER episode 5 [review]

There were few instances during the last 4 episodes that I felt like I wanted to give up reviewing BORDER. It’s not the type of drama which I’ll watch for the second time and it’s not entirely very memorable as well.

However, I guess episode 5 somehow got my attention again after an underwhelming episode 4 (that bomb tease was a huge disappointment).

This time, we have yet another murder victim who couldn’t remember his own identity. The meek-looking character made it easier to sympathize and of course, it added to the mystery as he lost his memory. That made it tougher for Ango to find out the cause and how he was murdered.

I still find the costumes they wear during autopsy awkward.

There wasn’t much for Ango to do except wait for autopsy report and if anyone came in to report a missing person. Meanwhile, the victim followed him everywhere like a lost puppy.

It wasn’t until halfway the episode that we found out his identity. I thought it was pretty convenient how the police found the wallet in a trash can at a store. I mean, did they really search ALL the contents of each trash can in the area?

After knowing his identity, his wife was called to the police station. Upon seeing his wife, his memories came back.

I think what I liked about this episode was how close Ango had gotten to the murder victim. This is also the first time the victim tagged along with him throughout the episode.

BORDER ep05 (848x480 x264).mp4_snapshot_31.18_[2014.05.12_13.33.35] The victim, Okabe asked Ango’s help to do something. Only then, he’d tell what happened the night he died. I thought the way he got that bruise on his chest was funny. He actually wanted to jump over a rail thingy but tripped and fell. After he knocked his head, he fell unconscious and couldn’t recall anything afterwards.

I don’t know whether to laugh or feel pity for him.

This is yet another one-man show episode. While I know Oguri Shun is supposed to be lead but the other characters are being left out, a lot. Moreover, it’s not only that which I feel is missing. Even Ango’s background was not explored or developed further than what was told in first episode. I’m beginning to think it’s a bit of a waste for the other cast. For example, his co-worker guy was just supposed to be there for a few seconds of comic relief. The female coroner only appeared couple of minutes in the entire episode. It’s created to focus solely on Ango but whether or not Oguri Shun is able to keep this drama from sinking, we’ll have to find out in another month.

Ratings seem to have increased although personally, I still think this is a pretty mediocre drama of the season.

9.7% – 9.7% – 10.1% – 12.0% – 13.1%

I think more people watched this because he had more contact with the victim.
