The finale was SO GOOD!!!! I still can’t believe they were able to deliver such a good finale. How should I describe it? It friggin’ made me cry. Well, I didn’t cry like a kid but it definitely teared me up, especially that one scene. All those mixed emotions- anger, frustration and finally, liberation.
I’m lost for words.
When was the last time I felt like that? For such a long time, it’s been a while since I had so much emotion going through me while watching a Japanese drama.
*Now I understood why everybody was tweeting that they cried while watching the finale.
Without further ado, let’s recap this finale!
In the previous episode, we all thought Nishikado would kill Arima. He was going to, but someone else was faster. That scene where he was about to slash someone, it was actually him throwing his cutter onto the ground out of frustration when he saw Arima already dead.
Asumi brought Suzu to the hospital after she felt weak, who wouldn’t with the sight of her own father, dead.
However, Asumi didn’t know that and still held some doubt over whether he did kill Arima or not.
Back home, she found him chatting with her step-dad. When they went up to her room, she asked him directly whether he was the one who killed Arima.
Nishikado also found out from the police that the drug used to kill Arima was the same as the one for Bandai.
That person should also be responsible for Bandai’s death. Asumi gathered information till morning together with Nishikado. He sooo obviously stayed overnight there xD I doubt anything happened though hahahha
Anyways, Nishikado asked her to go down for breakfast. Asumi was surprised to find food ready on the small table. Nishikado complained that he couldn’t find anything so he went and bought food. Asumi said she just didn’t have any interest in enjoying food.
Nishikado went to the library to check something. Am I the only one who noticed that he liked to bite his finger like that? This is the first time I’ve seen anyone with that habit.
At the hospital, Arima’s wife apologized to Asumi for what Arima had done. She watched the recording from the previous episode. From the conversation with her, Asumi found out that Suzu was actually their adopted child and they had another daughter previously named Minami. So now, we know who is Minami…she mentioned this name in ep9 outside Suzu’s room.
She said Suzu was actually another doctor’s child from the hospital who approached Arima for help in regards to Suzu’s sickness. Minami died in a fire and Arima had felt guilty over it ever since so that explained why he had a strong will to do anything to save Suzu. Suzu’s real father pleaded for Arima’s help for transplant, and in return, Arima asked for the adoption.
So Asumi tried to find out who this doctor was. Hoshino came in handy here. She led her to the security room and together, they studied the recordings. They hypothesized that Suzu’s real father would definitely visit her.
\Through the recording, Asumi observed Nishikado following someone wearing a hat. That night, she phoned him to ask why he came to the hospital. He gave an excuse he was just there for work. She then mentioned the person wearing hat.
Asumi and him decided to lure the person out by kidnapping Suzu. Arima’s wife had told her that the only thing Suzu recalled about her real father was the merry-go-round he always took her to when she was young. So she used that.
“This is the last card”
Meanwhile, Nishikado went to the place where Asumi was placed in after her father’s death. (I’m thinking…orphanage?)
Next morning, she pasted the last card on the walls around Suzu’s room.
“Merry-go-round PM 5.00”
Nishikado brought Suzu to the park. Asumi was waiting there. Finally, she found out who Suzu’s real father was.
Ahhh this scene was heartbreaking.
The disbelief and shock Asumi had when she saw her step-dad.
“You’re not Arima Suzu’s real father, right?
Say it isn’t so!!”
“I’m sorry for hiding this from you”
“No way! You killed my father to shut him up?”
“Give me back my father!”
She took out a knife and probably would’ve stabbed him if not for Nishikado who appeared out of nowhere and punched her right in the gut. She fell unconscious.
HA! That FACE!
Had me fooled for a while there….
Back at the dining, Asumi saw the place had been emptied and the female worker told her Oichan had wanted to sell the place off. He had left something for her in the fridge. It was the lamb pie and a letter.
Meanwhile, Nishikado had brought Oichan to the association/society building Asumi was once there. Oichan asked when he realized that he was the one. Nishikado explained he saw his back at the airport but still wasn’t sure. But he also investigated the list of workers who had worked in the hospital when he found his name as the one responsible for anesthetic in the operation.
There were a few minutes of flashbacks as Oichan recalled what happened 15 years ago, how it all began. Basically, what I’ve told at the beginning about how he was involved. He also narrated his letter for Asumi, telling her his regrets and guilt. He had been carrying this huge guilt over what happened to Osanai who was his only shinyuu/best buddy.
He realized Asumi’s intention for revenge when she first came to him to ask for adoption. Having known how much Asumi wanted to avenge her father’s death, he also sent the records to Nishikado. He wanted him to support her. He also mentioned he trained for so long in front on the mirror in order to smile in front of her everyday. He had wanted Asumi to smile. However that never happened and so he wished for her to be able to smile honestly some day.
The reason he killed both Bandai and Arima was because he didn’t want anymore victims to die because of his own daughter. I’m glad it all came together in full circle and properly answered all the questions.
Nishikado called Asumi to ask whether she wanted to be present or not to punish Oichan. Nishikado had poured gasoline all over him, most probably planning to kill him there and then.
Nishikado was super kakkoiiiii here I can’t evenn…..
I have no right to live. Please let me die to atone for my sins.
That’s exactly what’s gonna happen. – Nishikado as he flicked the lighter.
I have a request. Untie me.. – Oichan
What are you talking about? – Nishikado
If it’s unbound, it’ll just become a suicide. I don’t want Asumi to be a murderer. I want her to live on with pride. I beg you, please. – Oichan
Because of those words, Asumi began to recall all of the people involved in the revenge. It finally came to her that killing Oichan wasn’t the answer.
When she pushed that bench in front of her out of frustration, that long bench, I was like “Let it go..just let it go..” Must have been quite a force because those long bench are usually heavy.
“Dad…dad, I’ll finish this.” – Asumi as she looked up.
Lol I thought she was gonna light Oichan for an instant or die along with him because she flashed back to Yuma’s death. I thought she wanted to die together or something.
But she knelt down in front of Oichan and hugged him, so hard and cried.
I teared up at this scene too T_T
I won’t let you die. I don’t want anyone else to be hurt anymore.
I don’t want to lose anyone again.
But I’m glad they didn’t kill anyone anymore in the finale. I mean, we’ve had enough deaths already I don’t think I can stand watching another person die.
Asumi and Nishikado brought Oichan to the police station. He was going to hand himself in.
This will definitely be the last time. Are you sure you want to go on with that face? – Nishikado, prompting Asumi to go see her step-dad for the last time.
Asumi ran after him and I thought this scene was quite nice.
Oichan! The last lamb pie, it was still bad.
Next time, make a better one. I’ll be waiting as long as it takes. – Asumi
Asumi finally smiled for him. It was genuine. At least, his wish came true.
Anyways, I was thinking…Oichan would be charged with murder right? Wouldn’t he be sentenced to death? But maybe he could plead for life in prison instead. Just a random thought that occurred to me. Ahh even knowing she wouldn’t be able to meet him again she still said that to him, trying to end it in a good way.
As for Minegishi Kenta, he seemed to be doing better at the hospital as he fooled around with the doctors, including Hoshino. Suzu will be receiving care at some other place while Date who had been in a coma ever since she tried to commit suicide, woke up. Jail would be waiting for her.
Lastly, Asumi and Nishikado were seen at the dining.
What do you plan to do from now on? – Nishikado
I thought of giving mobile medical clinic a try – Asumi
Either way, I’m glad she didn’t quit as a doctor. I mean, after spending all those years studying medical and to just quit, would be a waste.
Tomorrow will be a better day, right? – Asumi
Yup ^^ – Nishikado
That smile in the end ^_^
What a great finale. It felt so good. It felt so complete. No lose endings, except maybe it was a bit vague whether my favorite pairing, Asumi and Nishikado will be together or not. No hint whatsoever for anything to bloom between them. Plus did I hear Nishikado asking Asumi to bring back souvenirs for him at the end. You should go together with her to Oxford! However, I’m still happy they didn’t ruin anything. This is fine. I’m fine with it. As long as they’re still alive and not sent to prison or whatever.
What a journey. Thank you Team Alice for such a great show. It’s definitely been a while since I’ve come across an engaging J-drama. Last season was a lackluster. Alice no Toge managed to keep me glued to the screen from first episode till the last. Every episode had its twist and the never-ending suspense was quite remarkable. There were quite a lot of chilling moments too. The cliffhangers. The frustrations whenever Asumi lost her battle.
Regarding the last enemy, well, we all sort of see it coming in a way didn’t we? Of course, the trailers kept making us think Nishikado might be the one, but Oichan was also the last person standing. It just occurred to me that his picture in the promotional board for Alice was quite huge and the last few days, I’d been thinking, there’s no way for a minor character like him to have a huge image on the board. It must be a hint or something. The twist was well-done though. They definitely saved the best for last. Someone close to Asumi, someone we would never have thought of, someone who had been playing nice and innocent all the while. But Oichan wasn’t evil. At least, he tried to atone. Afterall, he was the one who sent the records to Asumi and Nishikado. Not to mention, he killed Bandai and Arima even though knowing the fact that his real-blood daughter Suzu might not be able to get transplant if both of them were dead. But he had wanted to help Asumi, in one way or another. I’m thinking he really saw Asumi as his own daughter already, instead of Suzu. That was why it made it even harder for Asumi to accept. Which is also why this last twist was great yet so heartbreaking. Oichan was the only one that I find hard to hate here.
I just wanna say again, all the cast did great job. Even the minor ones. I didn’t think anyone was bad at all. I’m seriously liking Odagiri Joe a lot already. I’m gonna hunt his previous works xD He’s also in River’s Edge this season, I’m watching that and am really liking the style. He was very compatible with Ueno Juri in this show that I won’t mind seeing both of them again in any work together in the future. Ueno Juri was beyond superb here. Really glad to see her back in dramas. I don’t think anyone would’ve played the role of Asumi as good as her. Hope to see her again in more dramas or movies soon, *ehem* preferably as a detective in a police drama (I want action scenes haha) but maybe a comedy would be nice too since she barely smiled here.
The soundtrack and cinematography should also be praised. The theme song, Taiyou to Hana by Takahashi Yu is very fitting in this show, everytime it was played at the end of the episodes, I just felt wow…this sounds really good. I heard Juri-chan mentioned in an interview that the producer had spent about 3 years preparing Alice no Toge’s story. Just for everybody’s information, this is an original story and not based on anything – manga or novel. Glad it worked out really well.
Overall, a MUST WATCH this season. It’s been a great pleasure to review this drama, every Friday night, I’d be waiting for it to show in Japan and wait till someone uploads it and I’d watch it without subs till midnight. Chasing this drama needed patience but I’m glad it was worth it. The ending was satisfying. Very much. I hope you guys enjoyed this show as much as I did, or maybe even more xD
Last but not least, a smiling Ueno Juri is best!
Till the next show! (I have yet to finish MOZU ^^)
