All the characters in this show are like they’re on the brink of being mental. The background music also adds to the whole spooky situation whenever they show the character’s close-up faces.
I’ll summarize this episode briefly. Yuko continued to deal with Reiko’s father who tried to come take her from the child care center. Reiko hated Yuko for separating her and the father and when she refused to eat anything, Yuko went to visit. She managed to make her eat again.
Yuko’s mother was exhausted from taking care of her senile husband so she had been trying to send him to the old folk’s home. She found one such place in Hokkaido. Although Yuko felt the company was a bit suspicious and asked her mother not to rush the decision, she went ahead and sold their house in order to pay the down payment. When the time came for the company to pick her husband, they never appeared. Yuko realized then her mother had been conned in the scam.
I think the conversation between them both in the kitchen was quite sad. Yuko’s mother blamed her for not telling her that the company was suspicious. Having the blame pushed towards her, Yuko was frustrated and left.
In the meantime, Shunsuke was having trouble accepting Kiyooka’s decision to get married and build a family. He even told her frankly that he didn’t have the courage to be a father to the child in her tummy. One night, Kiyooka brought her parents over to his house, thinking that would change his mind only to push Shunsuke even further to a corner. He asked the parents to leave and told them he didn’t plan to marry Kiyooka but will take responsibility of the child.
Personally, when I watched this scene, I felt pity for Kiyooka. She was pushy right from the beginning and she wasn’t exactly a good model teacher, a bit on the childish side too, but I couldn’t help but feel for her when Shunsuke acted like that. Not to mention, in front of her parents!
Mamihara, the policeman who suspected Yuko’s connection in all 3 family suicides, had a lot on his plate to deal with too. His family is complex and he finds himself getting too involved with a victim family whom he saved few years ago. There was a woman and her child who suffered DV from the yakuza husband and I assumed Mamihara sent the yakuza to prison and had since taken the role of father figure for the kid. He even started calling him ‘father’ whenever they meet.
The woman, Ayame most probably developed feelings for Mamihara as well but understood her position well enough to not cross the line. Mamihara needed to take care of his mentally unstable wife who was released from hospital. Besides that, his daughter, Mayumi resented him too for destroying their family.
Shunsuke met Yuko nearby while talking a walk and after some pep talk by him, Yuko decided to face her troubles more positively. She managed to get the money back from the person who wanted to buy their house.
I think this is one of those rare moments you get to see Yuko smiling.
Ayame got a call from Mamihara who was worried and wanted to check whether she was fine. Despite being scared to death when her yakuza husband had found out where she stayed, she forced herself to sound calm on the phone.
