In episode 2, we have a new case which involved a hostess that was killed. Police believed that the case was connected to the one couple of years ago where the killer was still at large. The first division’s police decided to pay a visit to Danno’s club and dragged both Ikuo and Hibino along for the ride. The ace of 1st division had suspicion about Ikuo and didn’t trust him one bit. However at the club after watching how he interacted with the hostesses, he thought Ikuo might just be a normal guy (never judge anyone by their cover, rule no.1 and he made a huge mistake here).
At the club, we get to see some funny moments. We know Hibino is a weak drinker and she passed out halfway through. Noticing how his buddy was asleep, Ikuo decided to have more fun by himself with the girls lol I thought he was pretty cute in that scene. Too bad they didn’t show Ikuo giving Hibino a piggy-ride (it was in the manga). He also met a hostess, Aoi who apparently was saved by Danno when her parents were killed. Since then, she had been working for him at the club. But Ikuo didn’t know this until after she was killed later.
Putting the case aside, I’d like to point some other things we noticed throughout this episode. So I think we can look forward to Danno’s antics of changing mottos every week. Last week, he was ‘lying’ about everything and this week, he was in the ‘praising’ mode. I think this is quite funny so I appreciate how the scripwriter gives him something to make his character more memorable. As for Ikuo, he’s the usual self, in front of his colleagues, he’s the quirky detective with a great sense of smelling ability. When he’s with Danno, he changed to someone who has a dark past with revenge brewing.
Hibino on the other hand has been wondering about whether Ikuo has something he is hiding ever since the first episode when the 1st division’s ace said to her about Ikuo, ‘Those are not the eyes of a detective, those are the eyes of a criminal.’ I thought the part where she offered to make Ikuo bento was sweet. As for her relationship with her estranged father, it’s really pretty bad. Her father has been transferred to the city she’s working in and yet, she’s not entirely happy or rather, indifferent about it. We learned that her mother had passed away when she was still a student and yet, she wasn’t close to her father. We can only speculate that her father probably focused more on his work than her well-being. The random new officer she met at the main office was really funny when she just abruptly asked to exchange contact with Hibino lol.
Also, did anyone notice that gorgeous dragon tattoo on Danno’s back? That was amazing.
Hibino also met Danno for the first time in this episode. Danno was clearly a bit worried that she might find out his relationship with Ikuo, although Ikuo assured him that she doesn’t know a single thing about them. Well, at least not yet but I’m sure by how Hibino has been observing Ikuo, she’ll probably find out sooner or later.
Another worrying factor was when Hibino’s father was seen looking at Ikuo’s profile in his office. I thought the action of thumping his arm on the table was kinda weird but scary all the same. He’s also wearing a golden watch so he might belong to that society of elites, which might be involved in the cover-up of the murder years ago. Could this be the reason of him transferring closer just so he could keep an eye on Ikuo?
Overall, I think the show’s going on a pretty good pace. There are clearly new things added into the show which are not found in the manga. I can’t judge yet whether that is for the better or not until we finish the show. As of now, I’m happy they’re focusing a lot on the three characters because in the manga, we don’t really get to see much of Danno and Hibino was worse. So the balance is considered good here. The other side characters might not get the development they deserve but then again, we’re really here for these 3 characters and most of all, whether both Ikuo and Danno manage to take revenge.
