While nothing truly dramatic happens in this episode (except the end maybe), Sakura graced our ears once again with MORE songs. I’m constantly reminded of how much I miss musical themed drama/movie in this particular episode. I like the background music in this show, the guitar riffs etc. Personally, pop/rock based music is right up my alley. Love it. Also, I sense more romance hints and jealousy brewing…
Sakura’s feelings for Kouhei
I’m not 100% sure it’s LOVE kind of feel but it’s starting to show little by little and especially in this episode, the BIG questions she asked Kouhei. Is he married and does he have a girlfriend? She’s also evidently very comfortable around him and of course, when music is involved, there’s no barrier.
They both seem to enjoy performing (Kouhei still holding back but I’ll get to that later).
The conversation between Sakura and Natsuki at the clinic may also be an omen of something yet to come. While Natsuki implies that Sakura’s special feelings for Kouhei is natural, Kouhei’s kindness towards her can be mistaken as love. Natsuki also says it might put Kouhei in a tough spot. In the end, Sakura laughs it off by saying she likes younger men.
There’s also a scene where she realizes Kouhei is living together with Natsuki when they went to buy guitar.
Is jealousy brewing in Natsuki and Soraichi?
Because I really sensed it in this episode. It’s not the bad kind of jealousy though. Natsuki’s intent is for the good of both Kouhei and Sakura. She has hinted to Kouhei about getting too close with Sakura and might send the wrong signal, which Kouhei shrugged off. Her conversation with Sakura also marks her feelings about Kouhei and her worry that this closeness may later develop into something else.
Soraichi’s also acting odd after hearing about Kouhei teaching Sakura, in the process, even injuring himself lol and also being pissed off when he sees Sakura’s new guitar. Soraichi clearly thinks of both Sakura and Mami dearly (remember when he wailed at the station when Mami’s moving to Tokyo) and their friendship is really, really strong. There’s this unbreakable bond there. Whether or not Soraichi has any other feelings towards Sakura, I don’t know yet but he’s definitely not very happy about her being closer with Kouhei by the day.
Sakura + Kouhei performance
Before the show, Sakura’s getting cold feet and lacks courage to perform. So when Kouhei asks her to make a decision because he’s fine with anything…
Then…can I think of you when I sing? By doing so, I feel like I can sing and move forward. For example, with Mami’s wedding speech and Natsuki-sensei’s lessons. I won’t say I wanna hear your guitar anymore so…for the last time...- Sakura
Moving forward…huh…– Kouhei
Then…I’ll play the guitar with only you in my mind tonight – Kouhei
The performance is brilliant. Sakura’s moment to shine and it’s just so great to see Kouhei enjoying every bit of it, even singing a little.
When she’s having trouble introducing herself, Kouhei assists her by playing some melody and she practically sings the words instead of speaking.
500 miles never gets old
The only thing is during the end, the crowd is cheering for encore. Despite Sakura telling Kouhei she wants to sing more, Kouhei decides to step off and end it right there, leaving Sakura devastated, scared, alone onstage. It’s like being abandoned by the person you trusted the most! Kouhei, you coward.
While Sakura ends up crying in the loo, Kouhei tells Natsuki he has made up his mind to retire completely from music.
While I can understand Kouhei’s reason for doing so, it’s irresponsible for cutting it off so abruptly like this without even telling Sakura beforehand. He’s giving her hope and encouragement and just when Sakura’s gaining confidence, he abandons her.
Next episode preview seems to involve some music company scouting Sakura. We’ll see how that works out.
