Sono Okodawari Watashi ni mo Kureyo! ep1-6[review]

Mayu Matsuoka’s the main reason that prompted me to watch this. It’s a mock documentary, about 20 mins each episode and such an easy series to binge-watch. In each episode, they have different guests, most of them (as of now) are manga artists and Saito Takumi makes an appearance in episode 5. This show is also being subbed and you can get the subtitles here.

Mayu Matsuoka and Ito Sairi are hosts who go round interviewing people about their obsessions. It’s based on a manga by the same title.

The thing about this show is, because it’s a mock documentary, there are instances when you’re not sure what to believe or not to believe. They manage to make everything feel realistic, they even show us the behind the scenes like when they’re reading the scripts in the buses, preparing for filming and whatnot, to the point that when things get ugly, you can’t help but get this mixed feeling.

For example, in episode 1, when Sairi and Mayu quarreled in the bus because Sairi’s being playful and keeps messing up what they’ve planned, being the troll she is, I wasn’t sure whether to take that entire bus scene seriously or not.

The fight seems real and Mayu’s tears don’t look fake, but at the end of the day, I try to take this with a grain of salt and accept the fact that they’re most probably scripted (since it’s a mock documentary after all).

Then there’s the scene where Mayu gets negative feedback for being ‘too kind’ while Sairi gets praised because she’s honest and doesn’t put on a facade. I do agree Mayu has been trying to do the ‘right’ thing and in turn, that makes Sairi’s blunt remarks which often takes people off guard really amusing…either way, this is probably scripted again haha

But kudos to them for making it look realistic at least!

That aside, I like this show so far, it’s actually entertaining and gives insight to some manga artists’ work and of course, weird obsessions.

My favorites are episode 3 and 5. Episode 3 really makes me go “What the hell did I just watch ?!” at the end so that was pretty epic and sick at the same time.

Because Sairi makes out with their guest who’s a manga artist (apparently, he only draws the eyes in his manga lol) and that leaves Mayu royally annoyed the entire episode. That’s why this particular episode is so entertaining.

I like how they carry on with this Sairi-eye guy till ep4 and Mayu again, has a fight with Sairi because of that.

Then by ep5, Sairi declares she’s dumped the guy so everything’s fine again lol

Episode 5 not because I like Saito Takumi but because alas! A familiar face!
Also, since they take extra care to pixelate the surrounding of the apartment, I think it’s really his house? Guy’s got HUGE movie collection!

I also like how relaxing this entire episode is. Mayu after being pointed out earlier about her attitude, has become more forward about what she really thinks too, so I take it, that’s a good thing?
Though I actually like the ‘good guy. bad guy’ combination before. It makes for a hilarious dynamic imo.

Episode 6 is quite funny too!

The model runway walk lol and the both of them poking fun on the model behind his back.

The model whose obsession is shoujo manga, doesn’t seem to have an outstanding peculiar obsession after all, more like any other avid manga reader. So when Mayu’s trying to dig more from him, it turns kinda sour.

He’s on the verge of tearing up lol

Episode 2 is my least favorite because the whole love story between the guest and his girlfriend is just weird. The girlfriend singing at the hospital is plain awkward too (even though it’s supposed to be romantic?).

I do like the addition of continuity and character development in this show. They’re most probably scripted but it’s a nice thing to see because stuffs like that happens in real life, especially in variety shows I’m sure. For example, Mayu’s character is the type to be on the safe side and would try to do her best to make peace out of everything, the kind who will fake it even if something tastes super nasty. So in this regard, Sairi is a stark contrast because she will just bluntly express her honest feelings. So this leaves Mayu kinda ‘fake’ and she ends up having a complex. She doesn’t know what should she do, be blunt or pretend to be nice? So we’ll see how this develops in the remaining episodes.

Another pleasant surprise is whenever Mayu has the chance, she’d declare her love for Morning Musume and Sayashi Riho, her favorite member. When her oshiness comes out, it’s fun to see (since I like MM too).

  1. Really nice, thorough review. I have to agree with you on the special quirks of this mockumentary. It seems too real! I think they should’ve played fictional characters if the story is made up, though they are based on the actresses themselves. Kinda gives way to prejudice against the girls in real life, doesn’t it?
